Do People Think Like Computers?

چکیده
Human cognition inspired the earliest algorithms for gameplaying computer programs. However, the studies of human and computer game play quickly diverged: the Artificial Intelligence community focused on theory and techniques to solve games, while behavioral scientists empirically examined simple decision-making in humans. In this paper, we combine concepts and methods from the two fields to investigate whether human and AI players take similar approaches in an adversarial combinatorial game. We develop and compare five models that capture human behavior. We then demonstrate that our models can predict behavior in two related tasks. To conclude, we use our models to describe what makes a strong human player.

Computers and the Nature of Man: A Historian's Perspective on Controversies about Artificial Intelligence
Throughout history, developments in the sciences have caused people to change their views of man and his place in the universe. The Copernican Revolution placed man on a planet, adrift in space; the Darwinian Revolution changed our view of human origins. Computers, too, raise questions about the nature of man: can computers think the way we do, and, if so, are we—like them—just thinking machine...
متن کاملA Comparison of Human and Computer Information Processing
Over 30 years ago, TV shows from The Jetsons to Star Trek suggested that by the millennium’s end computers would read, talk, recognize, walk, converse, think, and maybe even feel. People do these things easily, so how hard could it be? However, in general we still don’t talk to our computers, cars, or houses, and they still don’t talk to us. The Roomba, a successful household robot, is a functi...

1. Computation and human specialness. The new kid on the block in cognitive science these days is dynamic systems. This way of thinking about the mind is, as usual, radically opposed to computationalism-the hypothesis that thinking is computing. The use of dynamic systems is just the latest in a series of attempts, from Searle's Chinese Room Argument, through the weirdnesses of postmodernism, t...
متن کاملOn the Problem of Inputting Chinese Characterrj
' 1. The Problem. Many people are currently seeking a good way to do input and output of Chinese characters on computers. It seems to me that a lot of confusion about this problem is also prevalent, due perhaps to a misunderstanding of the problem. Basically, people are apt to think of input and output with Chinese characters as a simple generalization of the input/output problem for convention...

Executive Consultant, Emagined Security, [email protected]. There is an old Peanuts strip where Charlie Brown says, “Working here is like wetting your pants in the pool, wearing a dark bathing suit. You get that warm feeling but nobody notices.” Increasingly, I think computer security professionals in large enterprises are in that metaphorical swimming pool. In fact, many are swimming in t...
